CE Marking

The CE marking, as officially called since 1993 (formerly EC mark), is a compulsary conformity mark for products intended for  the market in the European Economic Area (EEA). Using the CE marking on a product  ensures manufacturers that the product(s) conform(s) with the indispensable requirements of the applicable EC directives.

Directives and requirements vary according to countries and products. Only products falling under the scope of the New Approach Directives have to be CE marked.

Each New Approach directive has a field of application which defines the range of products covered by the directive or the risks that the directive is intended to remove. This field of application usually covers the hazard related to a product or a phenomenon. Therefore, one product may be covered by several new approach directives according to the hazard inherent to a product.

Health and safety essential requirements are detailed in the directives annex. Essential requirements define the results to be achieved or dangers to be dealt with but do not indicate or provide for a technical solution. Nonetheless, for each directive a list of European harmonized standards is drawn up by European standardization bodies (CEN, CENELEC, ETSI) and may be used as a technical solution to meet the requirements of the directives. These lists concern all products covered by the relevant directive.
